I believe this kit might have been a WFL Barrett Deems ‘Porto-Pak’ Outfit catalog scan from ’57 , which consisted of a 22×12″ kick, 12×8″ tom and 13×5. Perhaps the original owner requested a 13″ instead of a 12″ tom. The 16″ floor would’ve been added at a later time as it wouldn’t have come with one from the factory. The only kit model that came with a 22×12″ at this time was the Barrett Deems ‘Porto-Pak’, but during the 60’s this more commonly became known as the ‘New Yorker’.

All of them are Aluminum snare drums. That would seem to indicate that they constructed those snares in batches. Possibly they would do a run of so many of the bead-less shells and then build them all up at the same time. Kevin, I think that the issue of when the date stamp was applied during shell manufacture, at final assembly or some other time would impact your theory.
I am still working on that question and wflkurt has some thoughts on the topic as well. I tend to believe that metal shells would have been produced in batches because of the manufacturing process and procedures of that era would dictate that approach. The likely made 5×14 center bead shells together and then made 5×14 non-beaded shells and then maybe switched back to 5×14 beaded or went up in size to 6. That approach just made sense with the set-ups and downtime on the machinery.
I am not entirely sure that the same would apply to wood shells, but I have seen plenty of pictures of undrilled shells of like size and finish stacked together at some step in the process.
